Today, my institution — Cardiff Metropolitan University — has announced ambitious plans for a new School of Technologies in the centre of Cardiff.
This new School (4D: Data, Digidol, Dylunio, Dyfodol — Data, Digital, Design, Futures) would be interdisciplinary in nature and focused on education, research, innovation and higher-level skills development across digital, data and design technologies. It would complement and augment Cardiff’s existing higher education offering, directly supporting the development of the STE[A]M agenda in Wales and the development of emerging high-growth sectors by satisfying the resulting demand for high-value skills, both for the UK and internationally. Furthermore, this is a timely announcement to support the implementation of the Cardiff Capital Region City Deal, building upon our existing expertise in computer science, informatics, data science and policy, as well as other innovative centres and projects within the university, including PDR, our International Centre for Design & Research, Fovolab and FabLab Cardiff.
